I’ve been reading Scandinavian novels that my husband keeps bringing home. Where he gets them, I have no idea.

But I just read The Vanishing by Tim Krabbe. I keep thinking about it. From the minimal style to the layering of tropes that point to problems of the mind — The Vanishing blew me away.

The Ice Palace by Tarkei Vesaas. A strange little book about two Norwegian girls who form a strange, vivid bond. What an opening.

And The Pledge by Friedrich Durrenmatt, a haunting mystery set in Switzerland.
