Updating a midcentury modern home

Richmond architects Danny and Katie MacNelly took only a light touch to their ‘new-old” midcentury modern home.

Instead of opening up walls or reconfiguring spaces, the MacNellys focused on updating surfaces such as floors, ceilings, paint and countertops.

They kept the design decisions that made their house unique: like the original retro bathrooms, the working wet bar in the den and a butterfly-wallpapered ceiling in one of bedrooms.
